In 1936, an alliance of left-wing parties won a narrow electoral victory in a deeply divided Spain. The political right refused to recognize the left government as legitimate. Right-wing extremists and militia groups turned to violence and called for a military coup. With support from Germany, Gen. Francisco Franco succeeded in the coup. A civil war followed. Spain went 41 years without a free election, with democracy only returning in 1977.
