Liberty win championship against New Mexico State, 49-35

The Liberty Flames aim to finish a dream season on Friday evening. Liberty is 12-0 overall and 8-0 in Conference USA action, with the Flames riding a school-record winning streak. On Friday, Liberty will face the New Mexico State Aggies in the 2023 Conference USA Championship Game in Lynchburg. Liberty is one of only five unbeaten programs in FBS, and the Flames own a win over New Mexico State earlier this season. The Aggies are 10-3 overall and 7-1 in conference action, with New Mexico State entering on an eight-game winning streak.

“It means a lot ... first year, undefeated in the Conference USA. We got the greatest home-field advantage behind us. We’re super excited,” Sophomore Caleb Waters said.

Home-field advantage is right when you consider the Flames have gone 31-6 since joining the FBS in 2018.

“There’s a lot of energy, a lot of spirit, a lot of joy, a lot of dubs,” Sophomore Lizzy Haab said.

Liberty will be playing this CUSA championship game on their home field tonight while hoping to finish off a perfect run to go 13-0. Oddsmakers are considering the Flames a comfortable 11.5 point favorite to win this matchup. The New Mexico State Aggies are riding an eight-game win streak in their own right. The Aggies boast the No. 1 scoring defense in the country and a win in Friday’s CUSA title game would be just their fourth conference championship in the history of the university’s football program dating back to 1938.

“We came to win, and it didn’t work out. You have a lot of kids in there that fought their tail ends off,” Kill said post-game. “When you lose, you want it to hurt. I’ve coached teams that didn’t hurt enough because they didn’t care enough. It hurt these kids and I feel bad for them.”

Liberty, the only 13-0 G5 champion, recorded all 13 wins over FBS competition. Six of those wins have come against bowl-eligible opponents, including a pair over the 10-win Aggies. The Flames have beaten those opponents handily, winning those games by an average of 16.5 points per game.
