Raiders release veteran CB Marcus Peters

Raiders release veteran CB Marcus Peters

The Las Vegas Raiders waived cornerback Marcus Peters on Monday, a day after the ninth-year veteran was benched before halftime of a 31-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The team also waived safety Roderic Teamer, two days after he was arrested and charged with DUI and speeding.

"Yeah, it's always difficult when you have to release a player," Raiders interim coach Antonio Pierce said in his weekly news conference Monday. "That conversation, I don't look forward to. Hate it. Hate it. It's not good. It's not a good feeling.

"Me and MP had some good conversations throughout this entire process. I was the linebacker coach when he first got here. On and off the field, [he's] somebody I respect as a person. I respect what he's done in this game. He's professional, but it's a business. We're all going to get cut. We're all going to get fired. Get hired to get fired, right? So, he understands that; I understand that. It's part of business that we all hate for ourselves."

After the game, Pierce said it was a "coach's decision" as to why Peters, who played just 20 snaps, did not return, but he did not elaborate.

Monday's decision to part ways with Peters speaks volumes though.

The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro has struggled this season, in particular with run defense. Peters will be on the lookout to potentially join a fifth career club, having previously played with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens.

A report on Monday morning indicated that the team would part ways with Peters before returning from their Week 13 bye and Vic Tafur of TheAthletic.com reports that the team has officially waived Peters.

Peters started every game for the Raiders this season, but was benched during Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs. He had 43 tackles, five passes defensed, and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.

If Peters clears waivers, he will be free to sign with any team as a free agent and his experience could help him land with another team in need of help in the defensive backfield for the stretch run.

Teamer, 26, had just been activated off injured reserve that day after having appeared in six games, last playing on Oct. 15. He served an NFL-mandated four-game suspension in 2020 for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
