The redevelopment of the Flushing Waterfront has drawn intense opposition, much as the ill-fated Amazon headquarters in Long Island City, the Industry City rezoning in Sunset Park and the rezoning of Inwood in Manhattan did. Motivated by a fear of new development, ensuing rising housing prices and ultimately gentrification and displacement, opponents see new construction as a Trojan Horse for gentrification. Even the inclusion of affordable housing in the proposal, as in the Flushing Waterfront, does not dampen the skepticism of opponents.
