The police department in Lewiston, Maine, says it has identified a person of interest in a series of mass shootings Wednesday night.
In a Wednesday night press conference, Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck said that Robert Card, 40, should be considered armed and dangerous, and that his car has been found in the nearby town of Lisbon.
Sauschuck said there have been multiple casualties, but declined to give a number of those killed and injured, saying the numbers "are all over the map."
In a Facebook post, the Lewiston Police Department released what appeared to be a driver's license picture of Card. He appears to be the same person show in surveillance images carrying a long gun in an earlier release by authorities. The department said members of the public should contact law enforcement if they have more information about his whereabouts.
Authorities are attempting to locate 40-year-old Robert Card as a person of interest in the shootings, the Lewiston Police Department said in a Facebook post late Wednesday night. He is considered armed and dangerous.
According to a Maine law enforcement bulletin seen by CBS News, Card is a trained firearms instructor believed to be in the Army reserve stationed out of Saco, Maine.
He recently reported mental health issues, including hearing voices, according to the bulletin. He had also threatened to shoot up the National Guard base in Saco, Maine, the bulletin said, and he was reported to have been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this summer.
The White House said Wednesday evening, “The President has been briefed on what’s known so far about the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine and will continue to receive updates.”
Governor Janet Mills posted on X that she was aware of the situation and urging "all people in the area to follow the direction of State and local enforcement. I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials."
A “vehicle of interest” was found in Lisbon, the commissioner said. Earlier, Lewiston police said they were searching for a vehicle and posted an image of what appeared to be a small, white SUV with a front bumper believed to be painted black. Maine State Police confirmed to CNN the image is of the suspect’s car.
Lewiston is about 36 miles north of Portland and is the state’s second-largest city.
“Please stay inside your home with the doors locked,” state police said in a post on Facebook. “If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911.”
