Graceful. Adorable. Ghostly. Beautiful. All these words apply to the dumbo octopus, a rarely seen deep-sea dweller that's captured the imagination and adoration of ocean fans. Exploration Vessel Nautilus captured stunning footage of a dumbo octopus out for a relaxing swim. It's mesmerizing to behold.
The small octopus gets its Disneyfied nickname from a pair of fins that look like ears, much like those on the elephant hero of famous Disney flick Dumbo. Nautilus recorded the multi-armed animal through the eyes of a remotely operated vehicle capable of scanning the ocean depths.
According to the Ocean Exploration Trust, their scientists are "gathering data urgently needed to address local management and science needs" of the PMNM, including a better understanding of the deep-sea natural resources and biogeographic patterns of species distribution of the area.
Dumbo octopuses live at extreme depths, according to National Geographic, and are the deepest-living octopuses known. They can live in depths up to 13,000 feet below the ocean's surface.
Just in time for the upcoming Halloween season, scientists off the coast of Hawaii had a ghostly encounter with a rare deep sea creature.
During the Ala ‘Aumoana Kai Uli expedition, researchers set out to gather data needed to address the local management and science needs of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
While on their venture, the researchers came across a dumbo octopus that reflected the light of the team’s technology to give it a ghost-like appearance.
The cephalopod was discovered hovering above a remotely operated vehicle owned by the Ocean Exploration Trust used on the expedition as the vehicle explored the ocean floor about 5,518 feet, or 920 fathoms, deep near the national monument.
In 2020, marine biologist Alan Jamieson spotted a Dumbo octopus more than 4 miles down in the Indian Ocean’s Java Trench, claiming octopuses can find potentially suitable habitats on almost any seabed.
To make this happen, the cephalopod “will need some smart biochemistry to make sure it retains that sphere,” he told the BBC. “All the adaptations you need to live at pressure are at the cellular level.”
