After two road wins to start the 2023 season, the Miami Dolphins returned home to Hard Rock Stadium Sunday afternoon and put forth one the greatest offensive performances in NFL history, scoring 10 touchdowns in a dominant 70-20 win over the Denver Broncos.
Miami became the first NFL team to score 70 points since the Los Angeles Rams did so in 1950. The Dolphins' 726 yards of total offense was the most in franchise history and nine yards shy of the NFL's all-time record set by the Los Angeles Rams in 1951. The team's 350 rushing yards also set a single-game franchise record.
The NFL record for one game is 73 points, set by the Chicago Bears in the 1940 NFL Championship. The regular season record is 72 points by Washington in 1966.
Late in the fourth quarter the Dolphins had a chance to break the NFL regular season record and tie the Bears’ mark but opted to kneel instead of kicking a field goal from the Broncos’ 28-yard line.
The Dolphins are the first team in NFL history to record five passing touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns in the same game, and the second team in history to record more than 700 yards of offense since the Rams did so in 1951. They are also the first team in history to score 70 points with 700 yards of offense, and the second to record 300 rushing yards and 300 passing yards, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
"That's a lot of players executing a lot of things to a standard that's unrelenting," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. "When you have a lead -- so many leads are vulnerable in this league. So we'd talked at length all offseason just about adversity and sometimes adversity is having a two-score lead, because you can let the atmosphere dictate your product. So what I saw from a lot of guys ... that's guys really taking it to heart that we have one [opportunity] with this team in 2023, and we're going to make the most of it and be unrelenting with our standards.
Based on how the Dolphins played Sunday in the home opener, setting 13 franchise records, the Dolphins organization doesn't need to live with regret about losing out on Payton because Miami looks like a force in the NFL this season.
