The Pentagon floor outside the Joint Chiefs of Staff office is a lousy place to spend the night. About 50 years ago, I tried to sleep on that hard surface surrounded by my fellow soldiers in our armored unit attached to the 82nd Airborne, mustered there from Fort Bragg in response to demonstrations around Washington. It didn’t help knowing that many of the protesters were young Black men like me, angered by American racism at the end of the 1960s.
