The New York Giants tied their biggest come-from-behind win in franchise history, rallying from 21 points down to beat the Arizona Cardinals 31-28 at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. It was a thrilling victory for the visitors, except that it came with a dark cloud cast by the possibility of losing star running back Saquon Barkley to an ankle injury.
Barkley, who scored two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving), will undergo an MRI on Monday in Arizona to determine the severity of the injury and how much time he could miss, sources told ESPN.
Barkley's ankle was swollen after the game, but the initial thinking, in the words of one source, is that "it's an ordinary [sprain], rather than a high-ankle sprain."
After exchanging touchdowns to start the third quarter, the Giants found themselves down 28-7 with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter. Daniel Jones led the offense to four consecutive scoring drives (three touchdowns and the game-winning field goal) while the defense held strong as the Giants scored 24 unanswered points to defeat the Cardinals, 31-28. The 21-point comeback win matched the largest in franchise history (12/2/1945 vs. Philadelphia Eagles, 10/30/1949 vs. Chicago Cardinals) and the biggest in the Super Bowl Era.
"Every game is different," Daboll said after the win. "Every game you fight through some adversity. Tonight was a good example of being resilient and playing the next play and focusing on the next series. They did their job in the second half. I thought we did a good job on third down. Had some explosive, chunk plays. Made some timely stops at the end of the game. Made the game-winning field goal.
The sixth-year veteran signed a one-year contract worth up to $11 million to return to New York this offseason, fresh off a career year under coach Brian Daboll. Injuries, however, have plagued him throughout his career, most notably during a 2019-2021 stretch in which the Penn State product missed 20 combined games due to different ankle and knee ailments.
New York kept the pressure on in the fourth, pulling within 28-21 with 8:51 left on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Barkley. The Giants tied it on Jones' perfectly placed 11-yard touchdown pass to a diving Isaiah Hodgins.
New York forced a three-and-out, then drove 56 yards in eight plays to set up Gano's go-ahead kick.
Veteran running back James Conner rushed 14 times for 62 yards, also catching five passes for only eight yards. Wide receivers Marquise Brown and Rondale Moore each caught three passes, for a combined 61 yards. Dobbs targeted Arizona's tight ends often, as Zach Ertz and Trey McBride combined for eight catches and 44 yards receiving. Arizona's offense must be more productive against the Giants if the team is to post its first win of 2023..
