Max Verstappen is well on his way to a third consecutive Formula 1 championship and his title pursuit will continue when the season resumes on Sunday with the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. Verstappen has won eight races in a row and can tie Sebastian Vettel's all-time record of nine consecutive wins in front of his home country on Sunday while Red Bull Racing can extend its record winning streak to 14. The 25-year-old has won the Dutch Grand Prix the last two seasons on his way to a title and has already opened up a 125-point lead in the F1 standings over teammate Sergio Perez.
Alpine driver Pierre Gasly crossed the line in fourth place behind Red Bull driver Sergio Perez, but the Frenchman moved up to third because Perez was given a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
The Dutchman was roared home by an adoring home crowd of 105,000 who exuded an absolute determination to enjoy every second of the afternoon even as they battened down the hatches under flimsy ponchos and the wind threatened to tear precarious plastic pint pots from their hands. They were rewarded as their man secured a remarkable record.
Zhou and Alonso pitted for slicks on lap 11, with Verstappen doing likewise a lap later. As Perez went a lap longer, Verstappen was able to undercut him to take the lead by 3.5s.
Alonso made short work of Zhou, with Gasly and Sainz also moving ahead of him. Leclerc suffered another delay when Ferrari changed his front wing when he changed to slicks, dropping him to 13th, and he’d later retire due to the floor damage sustained after he’d clipped Oscar Piastri’s McLaren early on.
This has ruled the Australian out of next week's Italian Grand Prix, but there is no clarity about whether he will be available for a Singapore and Japan doubleheader later in September.
If he is still not at full fitness, the Qatar Grand Prix in early October is a likely return race for the 34-year-old.
Verstappen also moved closer to his own F1 record of 15 wins set last year and onto 46 overall. Verstappen, who turns 26 next month, is already fifth all-time in wins. Alain Prost (51) and Vettel (53) are within his sights with nine races left.
