More than 25,000 people in the U.S. have been killed by gun violence so far in 2023. While someone could be killed accidentally, it is unlikely that the gun owner would be sentenced to death or life in prison. If a store owner shoots a robber, it’s doubtful that a jury would impose one of the two major penalties.
