If people have any chance of living here affordably, New York City and its environs desperately need more housing, with a substantial share of it reserved for people with limited incomes. Yet despite an ambitious home production agenda introduced in this year’s budget by Gov. Hochul, the Legislature did exactly squat, with the plans deep-sixed by an unholy alliance between progressives insisting upon stricter tenant protections and suburban moderates who don’t want more density in their leafy, relatively quiet backyards.
