Jordan Henderson is considering ending his 12-year Liverpool career and accepting a lucrative offer from Steven Gerrard’s new club in Saudi Arabia, Al-Ettifaq.
The club are making a determined effort to sign the Liverpool captain, who was initially reluctant to leave Anfield and relocate to the Middle East with his family. The 33-year-old, however, is now considering an offer of a two-year contract that would double his £200,000-a-week Liverpool wage and also includes the option of a third year.
At 33, Henderson will be weighing up the immediate benefits of a lucrative deal in the Saudi league – where he would join former team-mate Roberto Firmino and a host of others big names – against the wrench of walking out of Liverpool right now. Henderson still has two years left on his Liverpool contract but the landscape is evolving with manager Jürgen Klopp rebooting his midfield and with more options to choose from heading into the next season.
Henderson is understood to be giving serious thought to joining Gerrard at his new club, which would end his 12-year association with Liverpool since his move from Sunderland in 2011.
The England international has become synonymous with the Merseyside outfit after making 492 appearances for the club and has won nearly every trophy under Klopp's management, including the Premier League and Champions League. But the 33-year-old has now received a serious offer which would be difficult to turn down.
Like Henderson, Thiago Alcântara is also attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League. Klopp retains an interest in Southampton’s defensive midfielder Roméo Lavia, the 19-year-old who is valued at £50m by the relegated club.
Another consideration for Henderson is the impact a move to Saudi Arabia would have on his England career. The midfielder played an influential role for Gareth Southgate at the 2022 World Cup and may be reluctant to jeopardise his international place before next summer’s European Championships in Germany.
Henderson will also be considering the implications for his England career should he move this summer. He remains pivotal to Gareth Southgate’s plans ahead of next summer’s European championships and will not want to compromise his position.
For sure, Klopp will want the situation resolved quickly as he readies his squad for the crucial conditioning work in their pre-season camp in Germany.
