We’re not whipping for state Sen. Andrew Gounardes’ bill to abolish early decision and legacy admissions at colleges throughout New York State, but we do share his distaste for a practice that gives a big leg up to the already privileged who apply when it’s first-generation students who really need support. The persistence of legacy admissions is especially harmful at a time when the Supreme Court looks poised to bar universities from considering race as a factor in admissions. Gone will be one important tool to help build diverse classes, while many colleges will continue to pave the entry path for those whose parents happened to attend.
