Fred Siegel — academic, writer, thinker — was an accomplished member of a quieter class that over the generations has shaped the city as much as any not through protests and rallies and strikes, but through trenchant ideas and civil argument. In recent years, the term “public intellectual” has become “celebrity professor”; Siegel embodied the word in its best, original sense. He died Sunday night in Brooklyn; New York is a less intelligent place without him.
