A Cornell study used a predecessor to GPT-4, the language model engine behind ChatGPT, to test whether politicians could tell the difference between AI- and human-written constituency emails. Cornell researchers emailed every state legislator in the U.S. a series of constituency letters — some composed by humans, others by an AI chatbot – to see if the unknowing politicians could tell the difference.
