In western New York Friday, a man rushed on stage and stabbed Salman Rushdie in the neck. The brave, biting, brilliant author of “The Satanic Verses,” “Midnight’s Children” and many other books survived the fatwa placed upon his head in 1989 by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, only to see a most horrifying assault here in the so-called land of the free.
