ALBANY, N.Y. — Public schools have until Aug. 1 to publish their plans on how to enforce New York State’s restrictions on smartphones in the classroom.
The policy is set to take effect this fall. As News10NBC has covered, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation banning smartphones or other internet-enabled devices in grades kindergarten through 12th for the entire school day, unless in an emergency. California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia have already adopted a similar ban, aiming to reduce distractions in schools.
As part of the legislation, the state set aside $13.5 million for schools to buy storage devices. Now, districts must develop a plan to store smartphones and to give parents a way to contact their kids in case of an emergency.
The state says districts must consult with teachers, parents, and students to develop a policy that works. The smartphone ban applies to charter and BOCES schools, in addition to school districts. Recently, the state launched a website where people can learn about the smartphone restriction policies.
News10NBC spoke with students and parents at a Brockport middle school and at East High School last year for their take on the smartphone restrictions.
