A raging fire at a fireworks facility in Northern California that caused a massive explosion and injured two people Tuesday evening became a criminal investigation Wednesday.
Cal Fire arson and bomb units responded to the scene Wednesday morning and are investigating the possibility of foul play. The two injured people were expected to survive, a fire official said.
Seven people remained unaccounted for late Wednesday, and first responders and investigators were working diligently with the property owner to determine the whereabouts of those individuals, Cal Fire said.
Family and friends of the missing spent Wednesday out at the site hoping for answers.
Authorities initiated evacuations in the community of Esparto, California, in the area of County Road 23 and County Road 86A, where the building is located.
Fire crews in Yolo County got a call about an explosion at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, and first responders to the scene found several buildings on fire as well as numerous explosions and spot fires.
The explosions posed a danger to firefighters, who had to move back in defensive mode and let the blaze burn. One of the explosions was so powerful it did some damage to a nearby home. The homeowner says the blast blew open his French doors and left plaster scattered on the floor.
The cause of the fire is unknown and under investigation.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office told KCRA in Sacramento it was monitoring the fire and explosion, and the state fire marshal sent an arson and bomb investigation team to the scene.
