BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff was set to return for 2025 after leading the Cougars to an 11-2 season in 2024. That now won’t be the case, however, as he faces a civil lawsuit and a multi-game suspension tied to a serious off-field accusation.
According to reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Kevin Reynolds of The Salt Lake Tribune, Retzlaff is leaving the program and plans to enter the transfer portal.

Per The Tribune, a recently filed legal response by Retzlaff argues that the sex with the woman was consensual.
Premarital sex is against BYU’s honor code, which calls on students to “live a chaste and virtuous life.” According to The Tribune, Retzlaff was facing a 7-game suspension by BYU for violating the school’s honor code.
On the football field, Retzlaff was set to be a redshirt senior in 2025. He played 2 seasons of JUCO football in 2021 and ’22 before joining BYU in 2023. Last season, Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, adding 6 rushing scores.
