Lonzo Ball is departing Chicago, but he departs a man of his word.
As his time in the Windy City comes to an end the former second overall pick in the NBA Draft will leave with plenty of memories – including Chicago’s newest star name.
Reese and Chicago have endured a tough start to the WNBA seasonGetty GettyBall is saying farewell after four injury-hit seasons in Chicago[/caption]Angel Reese arrived in the city to give Chicago a double act to be proud of, but after just a year, it is pastures new for Ball, while Reese’s second season makes headlines of if it’s own.
But the pair memorably linked up when Ball – is heading for the Cleveland Cavaliers in a trade , per ESPN senior NBA Insider Shams Charania – appeared in November’s episode of Angel Reese’s podcast, Unapologetically Angel.
Top of the agenda was whether Ball actually paid for the fine that Reese had picked up earlier in her WNBA rookie season.
Reese had been ejected on June 4 during Chicago Sky’s loss to eventual WNBA champions New York Liberty, and the rookie was fined $400.
Reese was called for her fifth personal foul but after some words to the official and a wave of her hands in dismay she was quickly given two technicals and ejected from the game.
Reese has been among the many players to voice their anger at WNBA salaries, something that is likely to change as part of the new CBA currently being negotiated.
Ball was in attendance for that game and took to X to share his frustration with the call and promised to pay the fine Reese would get for the altercation.
“Ref that threw out @Reese10Angel is weak btw,” Ball wrote.
“You know who you are (Keep ya money Angel I got you.)”
Reese replied to the post: “Appreciate you gang!”
Reese was quick to highlight Ball’s offer, which he confirmedAppearing on her podcast, Ball confirmed that he did pay the fine, but realised he gave way more than he needed to.
“I did,” Lonzo said when asked by Reese did you pay for my fine during a fan Q&A segment.
Reese went on to explain how Ball had overpaid for it.
“You gave me $2000, but do you know how much the fine actually was?” Reese said.
“It was only $200… I appreciate you.”
Ball explained he contacted former Chicago Sky coach, Teresa Weatherspoon to make sure Reese got it.
The WNBA star said: “Yeah, she gave me in cash. I appreciate that.”
Initially, Reese was meant to be fined $400, but the WNBA rescinded one of the technicals meaning the sum was just $200 so the Chicago Bulls’ point guard overpaid by $1800.
Ball and Reese couldn’t stop themselves from discussing how bad the ejection was.
“That was a terrible tech, that was my first WNBA game ever … awful tech,” Ball said, while Reese revealed she appealed the fine but never got the money back.
Ball returned to action in the 2024-25 season after missing two full seasons with a knee injury that required a cartilage transplant following several surgeries.
Drafted by the Lakers in 2017, he averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in the 35 appearances he made in his returning season.
Reese and the Sky are 12th in the Eastern Conference after a season to forget so far, winning just four of their 15 games.
However Reese’s brother gave the family another reason to cheer, after he was signed by the Lakers as an undrafted free agent following last week’s NBA.
He will likely be given a chance to impress in the NBA’s Summer League, which takes place in Las Vegas in July, while Reese is back in WNBA action on Sunday night.
