SAN DIEGO – To promote better neighborhood connections across differences, the public is invited to watch “Join or Die” on July 1.
The screening of the 93-minute non-religious documentary at Resurrection OB, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., begins at 7 p.m. It will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. by a “club fair,” at which all local clubs and associations are invited to have a table and share membership information.
Sunset Cliffs BoulevardThe free event is sponsored by Parish Collective, a national community-building network, in cooperation with Peninsula Faith Leaders and Resurrection OB (same people as a recent Good Friday walk).
In this documentary, guests can follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam.
“Join or Die” is about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it.
Join Putnam as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly, what can we do about it?
Putnam’s groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to U.S. democracy’s present crisis. The film posits that the decline of civic engagement over the past decades is leading to a crisis for democracy — and that the answer is joining a club.
Resurrection OB spokesperson Stasi McAteer noted Putnam’s cutting-edge film was directed and produced by the brother-and-sister team of Pete Davis and Rebecca Davis. Pete Davis also narrates the film.
Rebecca Davis was a senior producer with NBC News for nearly a decade, where her work focused on social movements, environmental and economic justice, and community innovators.
Pete Davis is a writer, civic advocate, and a former student of Robert Putnam’s. He wrote “Dedicated: The Case for Commitment in An Age of Infinite Browsing.” He is a co-founder of the Democracy Policy Network, a policy organization focused on raising up ideas that deepen democracy.
“[The film’s producers] have been screening the film all over the United States,” said McAteer. “One of the basic goals in hosting the film is to encourage people to become joiners. Resurrection is not just showing the film, but also hosting a club fair, inviting local organizations like Rotary, Friends of the Library, and local youth groups who work together for social good, to come out and meet with their neighbors. Then we’ll screen the film.”

About the film
The core inspiration for the documentary “Join or Die” is social scientist Robert Putnam’s book “Bowling Alone,” examining the decline in social capital and civic engagement in America.
The book argues Americans are increasingly disconnected from formal and informal social groups, leading to a decline in civic engagement and social capital. The documentary takes this concept further, exploring the consequences of this decline and presenting it as a crisis for American democracy.
“Join or Die” features interviews with Putnam, who discusses his research and its implications.
It also includes perspectives from various figures, including Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who discuss the importance of community involvement.
The film aims to inspire viewers to reconnect with their communities by joining clubs and participating in civic activities, echoing Putnam’s call to action.
