First Alert Weather In-Depth: Western New York weather update from heat wave to cooling trend ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – This past week, a persistent dome of hot, humid air settled over the Northeast, sending temperatures soaring between 90°F and 100°F across the region. This marked the first official heat wave of the season for Rochester—arriving early, considering we are still in the month of June. The combination of high heat and humidity resulted in significantly elevated cooling demand, pushing power usage across New York State and the Northeast to near-record levels.

Fortunately, relief has arrived mid-week as the heat dome gradually shifts southward. In its wake, we are seeing some moderation in temperatures and a reduction in humidity levels.

Looking ahead, the forecast suggests a transition in the broader weather pattern. The jet stream is expected to shift southward as we move into July, allowing more seasonable conditions to return. The six-to-ten-day outlook still supports above normal temperatures, but the eight-to-fourteen-day forecast indicates a higher likelihood of temperatures returning closer to normal for this time of year. This should be a welcome change after such a toasty start to summer.

While the worst of this heat wave appears to be behind us, it is an early season reminder of the challenges extreme weather poses to public health and safety.
