Unfortunately, in spite of its mass critical success, the series struggled to make it past its initial two seasons, ultimately leading the show to end following Season 2's 2019 release.
In an interview with CBR promoting his new film The Waterfront, the 61-year-old McCallany revealed that, while Mindhunter could return at some point in the future, it likely won't be as a series. Rather, it will be divided into three succinct films, with scripts currently being developed for each Mindhunter-related movie.
Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mindhunter followed two mismatched FBI agents (McCallany and Jonathan Groff) embarking on an experimental new study of serial killers within the U.S. Based on John Douglas's best-selling nonfiction book of the same name, the series incorporated many infamous killers from America's past, including Ed Kemper, David Berkowitz, Tex Watson and Charles Manson.
In the past, series creator David Fincher discussed the various logistical challenges the series faced that prevented it from entering production on a third season, telling Variety, “It was an expensive show. It had a very passionate audience, but we never got the numbers that justified the cost.”
