Shakerra Carter, Ed.D., Vice President of Student Services at San Diego College of Continuing Education, has been selected as one of 40 participants in the 2025–26 Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship, a program of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. She was chosen from more than 120 applicants nationwide.

The fellowship is designed to prepare senior leaders at community colleges for future presidential roles. Participants will take part in a 10-month program focused on student success, equity, and institutional effectiveness. The group includes leaders from 19 states and represents a mix of urban and rural colleges.

“I look forward to engaging with the Aspen Institute’s practices and bringing that insight back to help support student success at our college,” Dr. Carter said.

The Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship aims to prepare the next generation of community college presidents, as many current leaders are expected to retire in the coming years. Fellows work with experienced college presidents and study local labor market conditions, student outcomes, and long-term strategies for improving college performance.

Fellows are selected based on their focus on student outcomes and interest in pursuing a college presidency within five years. The fellowship is supported by the Burton Family Foundation, Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, College Futures Foundation, and the Mellon Foundation.
