The governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, announced his intention to establish a new international airport in the city in northern Syria, with a capacity of 15 million passengers annually.
According to a statement from the governor during his meeting with the Syrian community from the city of Aleppo in Istanbul, Turkey, which was attended by Enab Baladi today, June 13, work is currently underway to find a suitable land for the airport.
Al-Gharib noted that the current airport is small and lacks basic services.
He explained that the current airport receives around two million passengers annually, indicating that it also contains a military airport attached to it.
Aleppo Airport is an internal airport alongside five other airports in Syria and serves areas and provinces including Idlib.
The airport stopped operations before the military operations that led to the ousting of the regime of the deposed president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
On March 18, the first domestic flight landed, arriving from Damascus International Airport, after the airport was rehabilitated and officially reopened for air traffic, following efforts that lasted about three months.
On March 23, Royal Jordanian Airlines announced the operation of a test flight to Aleppo International Airport after a 14-year suspension, preparing for regular flights, thereby becoming the first international airline to land in Aleppo since the fall of the regime.
On May 6, the first international flight arriving from the Jordanian capital Amman landed, operated by Royal Jordanian.
Rehabilitation of airports
The war and neglect by the previous regime caused the halt of maintenance and modernization operations in Syrian airports, especially the international airports in Damascus and Aleppo, which affected the level of services and the ability to meet the needs of travelers.
Since the establishment of the Civil Aviation Authority, work has begun on rehabilitating Damascus International Airport, both from a technical perspective and infrastructure, such as service buildings, airport lounges, service annexes, the main passenger terminal, and the repair of runways, which are still ongoing, according to the Director of Public Relations for the Civil Aviation Authority, Alaa Salal.
Salal explained to Enab Baladi earlier that the Civil Aviation Authority is responsible for executing rehabilitation work, in cooperation with some local companies at the present time.
There is no final estimated cost for the rehabilitation work at Damascus International Airport, according to the Director of Public Relations for the Civil Aviation Authority, noting that there are new projects continuously being undertaken by the authority.
The authority has moved to rehabilitate Aleppo International Airport after it was destroyed twice, and has been fully repaired and the runways have been prepared, according to Salal.
