Scholar Athletes of the Week: Mendon’s Cameron Barbulean and Samuel Harrigan ...Middle East

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – On the back of Pittsford Mendon baseball’s warmup tees, you’ll see a few different words like ‘family’ and ‘uncommon.’ But one word you don’t see – trust. While it may not be spelled out, the Vikings show it on the diamond.

“It’s tough not to trust the boys behind me but yeah I had full confidence in myself, I had full confidence in the team that we were gonna win the game,” said Cam Barbulean, a Pittsford Mendon senior.

“Takes a lot of pressure off you as the players because he’ll be there to pitch. Even if I didn’t get that hit we would’ve been able to keep playing because he would’ve gotten that 3 outs next inning too,” said Sam Harrigan, a Pittsford Mendon freshman.

Barbulean hurled a 9 inning shutout to propel the Vikings into the state semis. But it’s easy to trust a star senior. What about the younger guys on the team?

“All credit to the underclassmen. We’ve had four guys at least step up,” Barbulean said. “So many underclassmen that have stepped in, filled a need, and super proud of them.”

But Harrigan gets to be singled out because the freshman’s hit against Amherst drove in the one and only run of the game. A freshman who showed his team’s trust in him wasn’t for nothing.

“I thought it was gonna fall. He gave me a middle middle fastball. When it was carrying I thought he was gonna catch it cuz he got closer and closer to it so I got nervous, but then it dropped,” Harrigan said.

And soon after the ball dropped… so did Harrigan.

“Felt really good until I was under the dog pile. That hurt a lot,” Harrigan said.

Harrigan’s bruises from the celebration may be gone but Mendon’s trust in each isn’t. In fact, now the whole school is joining in.

“Feels great knowing that they’ll come to the games and cheer on for us, it feels great,” Harrigan said.

“Super cool to see support. I feel like years past we haven’t really had that just because we haven’t really been as good. Super nice to see all the kids coming. Not even just the seniors. The underclassmen had some boys come and yeah it was awesome,” Barbulean said.

So with all of Mendon rallying around the baseball team, the Vikings are starting to feel it. The program has claimed Sectional Championships a few times before but this team has a lot of trust in something more.
