A popular sports retailer has become the latest brand to leave a shopping mall in the USFacebook/Dick's Sporting Goods House of SportThe Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer, Pennsylvania has just lost another major brand name.
Dick’s Sporting Goods ceased trading at the location on Sunday without any additional information provided.
It is not known why the store closed down, and a company representative has not been available for comment on the final day of business in other reports.
The signs at the now vacant spot have confirmed the sad news for shoppers.
This departure leaves Macy’s as the mall’s only anchor tenant, but this won’t be the case for much longer.
Sadly, the Macy’s at The Pittsburgh Mills is set to leave soon.
The two-story, roughly 173,000 square foot space was put up for sale last year.
An anchor tenant refers to a large and well-known store in a mall that serves as a main drawing point for shoppers.
These stores are often department stores, supermarkets, or large chain retailers that attract significant foot traffic.
The loss of Dick’s Sporting Goods and soon Macy’s will provide a big blow to The Pittsburgh Mills.
NEARBY LOCATIONS
The notice also directs customers to Dick’s website or to nearby locations.
These include Dick’s Field House at The Waterworks Mall, Dick’s House of Sport at Ross Park Mall and Dick’s Sporting Goods at Monroeville Mall.
If locals are keen to find their nearest Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of those locations has not opened just yet.
But there isn’t long left to wait.
US braces for '45,000 store closures'
Some 45,000 bricks-and-mortar stores could close in the next five years, experts have warned.
Several major retailers have announced store closures or gone out of business altogether in recent years.
In 2023, chains such as Foot Locker announced plans to close up to 400 outlets by 2026.
While, other well-known retailers like Tuesday Morning and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams filed for bankruptcy in 2023.
Bed Bath & Beyond has closed all of its brick-and-mortar stores and is now an online-only retailer.
The most affected retailers have been clothing, consumer electronics, sporting goods, hobby, book, music, and home furnishing stores since the start of 2019.
UBS has predicted the total number of retail stores will drop by 45k from 958k to 913k.
Despite that, the report says that certain stores should thrive while others decline.
It said retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target, could be among the winners.
The spot at The Waterworks Mall will have its grand opening from June 20 to June 22.
Shoppers will be treated to sales, special offers and prizes, and a special guest appearance from a sporting icon.
Pittsburgh Steelers player Joey Porter Jr. is scheduled to appear from noon to 1:30pm June 21.
The Waterworks store is set to take over the former anchor spot of a Walmart once held.
Walmart operated the store for nearly 20 years before closing in 2022.
Underperforming sales was cited as the reason behind the departure.
The US Sun has reached out to Dick’s Sporting Goods for comment on The Pittsburgh Mills closure.
