Tom Petty guested on one of their songs and invited them to open for him on tour. Miller Beer tapped them to star in a commercial. Yet mainstream stardom never came for the band, which remains a cult favorite decades later.
Lead by brothers Danand Warren Zanes, the Del Fuegos are set to make a rare appearance on Sept. 13 at the Bellforge Arts Center in the band’s home state of Massachusetts.
Fans reacted to the news of the show with enthusiasm and a sense of nostalgia.
“Been a long time,” another chimed in.
A few simply posted, “Don’t Run Wild!” shouting out the title of the band’s 1985 song that reached No. 46 on the Mainstream Rock charts.
The Del Fuegos played their first show in 21 years in 2011 and have regrouped sporadically for reunion gigs over the years. Although the band never found a huge audience, the Zanes brothers both went on to success in their respective fields.
Warren Zanes became a noted academic with a Ph. D. in Visual and Cultural Studies. He teaches at New York University and is the author of the acclaimed books Petty: The Biography and Deliver Me From Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. The latter work is serving as source material for the upcoming film of the same name with The Bear starJeremy Allen White cast as a young Bruce Springsteen.
