Greg McElroy highlights ‘off the charts’ star power on Texas defense ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

It’s talking season, and Greg McElroy with Always College Football is counting down the days until the start of the 2025 College Football schedule.

A little under 3 months remain until football is back on our television screens, which has McElroy thinking: Which teams across the country can be considered to have the best 10 defenses in football?

As you can imagine, a few SEC teams made the cut – including McElroy’s No. 1 defense, the Texas Longhorns. Despite losing Jahdae Barron, Kelvin Banks and Andrew Mukuba – among a few others – McElroy is convinced that the Longhorns won’t only not skip a beat, they may have the best defense the program has ever had.

“If you look at what they have, it’s honestly off the charts from a star power standpoint,” McElroy said. “They’ve lost some key pieces… notably at defensive tackle… I don’t think there’s a team in the country that has a higher ceiling than Texas with the amount of guys that can take over the game, and absolutely wreck the opponent’s offense.”

McElroy’s segment on the Longhorns starts at the 51:50 mark in the video below:

It’s hard not to agree with McElroy’s sentiment. Anthony Hill is poised to be a monster yet again in 2025 after posting 8 sacks and just under 60 tackles in 2024. If that’s not scary enough, Colin Simmons is back as well after posting 9 sacks off the edge – 2 of which came during the College Football Playoff.

Texas’s defense is set to return an impressive 61% of its production from what was a top 5 unit in the sport last season.
