A 20-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he led police on a pursuit in Newport Beach on Saturday, May 31, authorities said.
Police initially responded to a shooting near a business on the 1900 block of Placentia Avenue in Costa Mesa around 5 p.m., where police said the intended male victim was left uninjured. Details on the motive or circumstances behind the shooting remained under investigation.
At around 7 p.m., the suspect’s vehicle was spotted traveling into Newport Beach, and a pursuit ensued.
With assistance from the Newport Beach Police Department, officers conducted a “high-risk” car stop of a possibly armed suspect near Balboa Street and 20th Street and arrested the 20-year-old on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Costa Mesa Police spokesperson Roxi Fyad said.
The investigation is ongoing. Fyad said the shooting does not appear to be random or gang-related.
