Ole Miss outlasts Georgia Tech, avoids elimination in Oxford Regional ...Middle East

Ole Miss couldn’t have started a must-win game any worse on Sunday afternoon on its home field.

The Rebels lost to Murray State on Friday, which set them up to have to play the long game this weekend at the Oxford Regional. Ole Miss outlasted Western Kentucky on Saturday to stay alive and get the opportunity to play on Sunday, but that Sunday game was going horribly when Georgia Tech put up 3 runs in the top of the first.

Then Ole Miss picked itself up and saved its season, again, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first, 1 more in the second, and answering every Georgia Tech comeback in an 11-9 victory that kept the Rebels’ Super Regionals hopes alive.

Now, Ole Miss will get another crack at Murray State, which hasn’t lost yet this weekend. The Rebels and Racers will square off on Sunday night in Oxford, with Ole Miss having yet another opportunity to keep its season alive and push the Oxford Regional into Monday.

But in order to even play on Sunday night, the Rebels had to survive on Sunday afternoon, and the Ole Miss baseball social media account celebrated the victory with the familiar phrase that comes to light in every sport when it comes to the NCAA Tournament: “Survive and Advance!”

After Georgia Tech scored 4 runs in the 4th inning to go back ahead, 8-6, Ole Miss responded with 2 runs in the 5th to tie it up at 8-8. The Yellow Jackets, who were eliminated with the loss, went back ahead 9-8 in the 6th before Ole Miss again responded with single runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th to walk away with the wild victory.

Five Rebels had multiple hits in the offensive showcase, with freshman sensation Hayden Federico leading the charge by going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI.

Now, we’ll see later Sunday night if the Rebels were able to dust themselves off after such a crazy victory and take down Murray State to keep those Super Regionals hopes alive.
