LSU escapes Little Rock, becomes 4th SEC team to advance to Super Regionals ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

LSU baseball escaped a scare from Little Rock in the Baton Rouge Regional on Monday night.

The Tigers won 10-6, but the game was closer than the final score may indicate. The Tigers fell behind 5-1 after the 2nd inning and had to claw their way back against an upset-minded Little Rock team. LSU didn’t re-take the lead until the 7th frame, but the Trojans had traffic on the base paths in the 7th and the 8th.

LSU clung to a 7-6 lead until it put a 3-spot on the board in the top of the 9th to give its pitching staff a little bit of breathing room. The result is LSU will be moving on to the Super Regional around along with just 3 other teams from the SEC: Tennessee, Auburn and Arkansas.

The hero for LSU yesterday was freshman pitcher Casan Evans. After Zac Cowan was knocked out of the game in the 2nd inning, Evans was brought in from the bullpen. He pitched the next 6 innings, limiting the Trojans to just 4 hits, 3 walks and 1 earned run over that timeframe. He also struck out 12 batters.

At one point during his outing, Evans struck out 8 Little Rock batters in a row.

Offensively, Luis Herndandez had a big day with 2 home runs. Ethan Frey was also a huge part of the win as he also homered and drove in a team-best 4 RBI on the day.

The road to the College World Series continues with Super Regional play next weekend. LSU will host West Virginia in a Super. The Mountaineers upset host Clemson this weekend to make it to the next round.
