The lingerie and personal care retailer has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to settle the tax class action lawsuit.
According to the settlement terms, class members will receive an automatic payment based on the amount of vendor’s use tax they were charged while purchasing any item from their website.
It is unclear how much the eligible class members would receive, but it would vary depending on the number of class members eligible for a refund and the total amount of money available to the settlement class.
The remaining funds, should there be any, would be donated to Crime Victim Center of St. Louis or another non-profit organisation.
Missouri residents who made a qualifying purchase from Victoria’s Secret between May 18, 2016, and May 18, 2023 could be eligible to claim the money.
All they need to show is a receipt supporting their purchase claims.
The final approval hearing for the Missouri sales tax settlement is scheduled for June 2, 2025.
What's a class-action settlement?
Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
