Mike Locksley shared his favorite all-time play-call with The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman this week and it comes from his time at Alabama.
Feldman’s story surveys a number of coaches from around the country such as Lincoln Riley, Bret Bielema, Kirk Ferentz and plenty more. For Locksley, his favorite play-call came during the 2018 SEC Championship Game when he was Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
With Tua Tagovailoa injured, Alabama turned back to Jalen Hurts against the Bulldogs to try to win the SEC title. With the game tied at 28-28 with just over 1 minute remaining, Locksley called ‘Dual Right West Brees’ — a play that gave Hurts plenty of options depending on what coverage Georgia was in.
Hurts made the right read and called his own number for a 15-yard rushing touchdown to give Alabama a game-winning score. The Crimson Tide got a stop on their ensuing defensive possession, securing a 35-28 victory.

For Locksley, it seems this play-call stands out because of what it meant for Hurts after being benched in the National Championship Game the year prior. Here’s an excerpt of Locksley’s comments from Feldman’s story:
Jalen and I would ride the bus together all the time to games the three years I was there. He would listen to old-school music and he’s this old soul. His dad’s a coach. Before that game, he said to me that he had a dream that what happened to him was gonna happen today, that he would end up replacing Tua, who had already been banged up. Jalen had been preparing in his mind that I’m gonna have to come win this m———er.
That season, Alabama went on to reach the National Championship game but fell to Trevor Lawrence and Clemson. Hurts transferred to Oklahoma the following offseason before beginning his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Locksley has been the head coach at Maryland since 2019.
