LSU has high expectations in 2025, but Brian Kelly believes the Tigers have the roster to achieve their goals.
Kelly told Paul Finebaum earlier this week that LSU will have the “best roster” he’s coached since arriving in Baton Rogue. Kelly made those comments in Destin, Fla., during SEC spring meetings earlier this week.
“Every coach that’s here believes they’ve got the best team they’ve ever had,” Kelly said. “So you leave these meetings, Paul, and you’re like, ‘is there a chance I could win a game?’ But we know our roster. This is the best roster that we’ve put together. It’s part of a process that has taken a little bit more time than we wanted but we’re doing it the right way and we’re pretty excited about what our football team looks like.”
Overall, LSU has fallen short of expectations in its first 3 seasons under Kelly. The Tigers have not yet made the College Football Playoff under Kelly and have lost multiple SEC games in all 3 seasons of his tenure so far.
Optimism for 2025 is high, though, as quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is expected to be one of the top passers in the SEC in 2025. Kelly talked to Finebaum about the growth he’s seen from Nussmeier and the LSU offense in general this offseason.

“I think it’s the maturation,” Kelly said of his returning QB. “I think weapons around him obviously make a big difference. In this league, as you know, being a first-time starter is so difficult. His ability to overcome some of the setbacks that he had, win our last 3 games where he really played at a high level, that’s going to continue. He had a great spring. He got a chance to really blend with the new receivers that we have and the weapons that we’ve added. I just think he’s going to have a great year going into Year 2.”
