Stagnation in home equipment market in Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Home equipment showrooms in Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad are witnessing a sharp decline in attendance, despite the offers and discounts on various home furniture and electrical appliances.

According to several shop owners, they have been forced to offer discounts of up to 30% in an attempt to attract customers, but this has not yielded the expected results.

There is no demand despite the price drops of refrigerators from $240 to $170, 32-inch screens from $100 to $70, ovens from $60 to $42, and gas air conditioners from $270 to $190.

As for water-cooled air conditioners, the price has reduced from $130 to $90, automatic washing machines from $240 to $170, and regular ones from $135 to $95.

Discounts without demand

Salwa al-Azzo’s refrigerator has been malfunctioning for over four months due to weak electricity in Tal Abyad, so she decided to visit one of the electrical equipment stores to buy a new refrigerator.

When she inquired about the price, the seller informed her that the smallest available model sells for $170, equivalent to 1.65 million Syrian pounds at the local exchange rate.

Al-Azzo (37 years old) stated that she does not currently have this amount, so she will try to temporarily repair her current refrigerator, in an attempt to save the necessary amount to buy a new one in the future.

After two months of his engagement, Azouz al-Farhan from Ras al-Ain began preparing to equip his home in anticipation of marriage, prioritizing essential electrical appliances.

Al-Farhan wandered through several home equipment stores to benefit from discounts reaching about 30%, but he found that the prices still exceeded his financial capacity, especially in light of the general inflation in the markets.

What complicated matters for him was the absence of an installment buying option, which would have alleviated the financial burden and allowed him to distribute costs over monthly payments, preventing him from securing all the necessities at once.

He noted that he bought some basic items from the stores but had to purchase the remaining devices secondhand, due to high prices and his inability to cover the complete costs from new items, reflecting the situation of many families amid tough economic conditions.

In dollars

Electrical appliance shop owners refuse to deal in any currency other than the US dollar, as it is more stable, which poses an additional challenge to residents who do not possess it, forcing them to convert Syrian pound, incurring extra losses due to currency fluctuations.

The main supplier for home appliance stores in Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad, Aladdin Murad, told Enab Baladi that the demand for home appliances has significantly dropped compared to the past two years.

He explained that the number of shops he supplied has decreased from 15 to just 7 due to the closure of several stores resulting from weak sales and declining attendance.

He added that the value of equipment he used to supply daily was around $8,000, while today it does not exceed $2,000 at best.

Murad pointed out that the limited geographic area, the ongoing siege on the region, along with a lack of job opportunities and reduced agricultural activity, have all contributed to the worsening economic situation and the decline in demand for these products.

Used goods become first choice

Amid high prices and declining purchasing power, buying secondhand appliances has become the first choice for the residents of Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad, where new prices have exceeded the capabilities of most, despite the discounts offered.

Ahmad Suleiman, the owner of a home equipment store in Ras al-Ain, told Enab Baladi that despite the discounts he had implemented of up to 30%, attendance at the store remains extremely weak.

He explained that the difficult economic conditions have led to a decrease in purchasing power among residents, forcing many families to delay purchasing non-essential needs and focus only on the necessities.

He added that the majority of residents have become inclined to buy used furniture due to its lower cost and better suitability to their economic conditions.

He indicated that if this situation continues, he may be forced to close the store or resort to installment selling as a last resort.

Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain largely depend on a single sector, agriculture, which limits employment opportunities and hinders the availability of diverse jobs for the residents. Furthermore, the weak infrastructure and limited services, along with the restricted area, have impacted the region’s ability to attract investments, all contributing to the weakened purchasing power of its residents.
