Children’s play space and bookstore Bluebird Play held a “Kids’ Clothing Swap” this month, inviting families to donate gently used children’s clothing and pick their own from a free community swap table.

The swap was a fundraiser for an important cause.

“We’re going to split the donation,” said Bluebird owner Amanda Klein. “Some items will go to Sharia’s Closet, and some will go to folks displaced after the recent plane crash.”

A 1985 Cessna 550 Citation plane slammed into a San Diego military housing community while flying in heavy fog on May 22, killing all six passengers.

About a hundred people were evacuated from their homes in the Murphy Canyon neighborhood due to the crash.

“We’re working with The Mom Walk Co., Lakeside, to get clothing to families most impacted by the tragedy,” Klein said.

At the end of the event, all unclaimed items were donated to Sharia’s Closet, a nonprofit providing free, emergency clothing to individuals and families in crisis. Their personalized “Bags of Hope” help children attend school with confidence.

“Giving back is at the heart of everything we do at Bluebird,” Klein said. “Each month, we partner with a local nonprofit and donate a portion of our sales to support their mission.

“While we’ve traditionally focused on financial and book donations, this clothing swap marks our first hands-on, community-based initiative, and we’re thrilled to connect families in a meaningful new way.

“This is about more than just swapping clothes. It’s about reducing waste, lifting up others, and building community.”
