Brian Kelly in favor of SEC-B1G games: ‘The Big Ten right now holds it on the SEC’ ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of SEC scheduling, but LSU coach Brian Kelly made his stance clear on one proposal.

Kelly voiced support for SEC teams annually playing Big Ten teams in the regular season. Kelly cited the last 2 national champions coming from the B1G (Michigan, Ohio State).

He might not have universal support but I respect Kelly's explanation for why he wants 9 conference games plus Big Ten."The Big Ten right now holds it on the SEC. They've won the last two national championships, that's the reality of it. We want to get challenged in that regard…

Whether the SEC and B1G adopt an annual “challenge” game on the gridiron, which reportedly could be a separate TV package, is currently unclear. The SEC has a lot to figure out on the scheduling front.

The conference has yet to announce its schedule plans for 2026 and beyond. The first big question is whether teams will play 8 or 9 conference games.

The number of conference games appears to be tied to the College Football Playoff format for 2026 and beyond. Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts stated Tuesday that it only makes sense for the league to go to 9 conference games if it the SEC is guaranteed Playoff spots.

Reports over the past few months indicated that SEC and B1G commissioners are aligned on a 14- or 16-team CFP that would give the two conferences 4 automatic bids each. The ACC and Big 12 would each receive 2 bids and 1 automatic bid for the top Group of 5 conference champion. The difference between the proposed 14- and 16-team formats comes down to 1 or 3 at-large bids.

With 4 auto bids proposed for each conference, the SEC and B1G appeared ready to play each other. We’ll see if that comes to be.
