Syria confirms to Morocco the closure of Polisario offices ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Syrian authorities confirmed the closure of the offices previously occupied by Polisario separatists in Damascus, in the presence of representatives from Morocco, on May 27.

A joint delegation, comprising Moroccan and Syrian officials, visited the separatists’ Polisario office to verify the actual closure, as reported by the official Moroccan News Agency (MAP).

The Kingdom of Morocco believes that through this step, Syria shows its commitment to respecting the national sovereignty and territorial unity of the Kingdom, rejecting any form of support for separatist entities, and reflecting Syria’s steadfast will to strengthen its bilateral cooperation with Morocco and enhance regional stability.

The Moroccan Kingdom announced yesterday the dispatch of a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Syria to complete the practical procedures for reopening the Moroccan Embassy in Damascus, with the aim of reviving diplomatic relations between the two countries and opening avenues for cooperation between the two peoples.

This is in implementation of King Mohammed VI’s decision to reopen the Moroccan Embassy in Damascus.

The delegation included members from the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad to the Syrian capital.

The Moroccan delegation began discussions with senior officials at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, covering the logistical, legal, and diplomatic aspects of this process.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced the reopening of the Moroccan embassy after it was closed since 2012, on May 17.

Bourita, during his participation in the Arab summit held in Baghdad, conveyed a message from King Mohammed VI to Arab leaders, stating, “Morocco has decided to open its embassy in Syria, which was closed in 2012, and we hope this will contribute to enhancing fraternal and bilateral relations between the two countries.”

Relations had definitively stopped between the former regime and Morocco since July 2012, when both sides exchanged expelling ambassadors. The Moroccan Foreign Ministry justified this step at the time, citing the failure of efforts made for a settlement in Syria, while the regime’s response was based on the principle of “reciprocity.”

Before 2012, tensions had characterized relations between Morocco and the regime due to the latter’s support for the Polisario Front and its recognition on April 15, 1980, of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which Morocco considers a separatist movement seeking to undermine the Kingdom’s security.

The conflict over the Western Sahara region between Morocco and the Polisario Front goes back to the post-Spanish occupation period, specifically in 1975, and this conflict transformed into an armed form that stopped with the signing of a ceasefire decision in 1991, based on proposals from the United Nations Secretary-General put forth in 1988.
