Sunderland are contemplating re-signing Jordan Henderson after winning promotion to the Premier League, talkSPORT understands.

Club legend Henderson was watching from the stands as the Black Cats beat Sheffield United in Saturday’s Championship play-off final.

The Sunderland hierarchy are aware Henderson is likely to leave Ajax this summer and believe he would add valuable experience to their young team.

England midfielder Henderson, 35 next month, is understood to be open to returning the Stadium of Light.

He started his career in the Sunderland academy before he broke into the first-team picture in 2008.

Three years later he left for Liverpool and collected a full set of major trophies – winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup – during his 12 years at Anfield.

Henderson completed a controversial move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq in 2023 but spent just six months in the Middle East before a move to Ajax.

He currently has a year remaining on his deal with the Dutch giants, having been named captain last year.

However, their season ended in disappointment after missing out on the Eredivisie title.

Ajax surrendered a nine-point lead with five matches remaining as they finished second behind PSV.

Former Sunderland striker and chairman Niall Quinn joined talkSPORT following Sunderland’s promotion and urged the club to bring Henderson back.

Speaking on the Weekend Sports Breakfast, he explained: “I had it from the day Jordan left and Liverpool paid us £20million back in the day that there was a big wide door open for him any time he wanted to come back.

“It’s not my business to do anything but just comment on that. But wouldn’t it be something else?

“I think he’s been a credit to the game, his hard work and his team play. He’s a real sort of driver.

“He went up to Liverpool, that first year was really tough and a year later, Jordan turned it all around and he was a huge influence.

“To see him lift that Champions League trophy, I think made everybody in Sunderland very proud.”

Even as far back as last October, former Sunderland teammate Darren Bent had a feeling he would head back to the north east.

“I still think he could definitely do a job in the Premier League, 100 per cent – he looks after himself,” said Bent.

Henderson played 79 times for Sunderland before moving to LiverpoolAFP

“I just feel going back to Sunderland makes sense.

“That’s his club, that’s where he started, that’s where I played with him, and I’m sure the fans would love him back.

“He’s had an unbelievable career when you look back at what he’s won, what he’s done, he’s competed for England, he’s had an incredible career.

“So I think for Sunderland fans it’s almost like a homecoming, and I think that’d be really nice for him to go there.”

Meanwhile, Sunderland are keen to keep Jobe Bellingham, who has held talks with Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund.
