Andrew’s Listed His Majesty’s Plate runner by runner betting guide ...Middle East

Down Royal hosts its annual Listed His Majesty’s Plate Day, and over the years, it has unearthed some high-quality winners, including Master Of Reality and Group 1 winner Order Of St George.

This year’s renewal may not have a future Group 1 winner hiding in plain sight, but there are a few interesting runners who may prove to be better than this grade.

Listed His Majesty’s Plate Runner By Runner Betting Guide – 2m

1 Cristal Clere (9)

Age: 7 Weight: 9st 6lb Form: 4266-3 Rating: 103 Jockey: Seamie Heffernan Trainer: John J Nallen

He has it to find with some of today’s runners on previous form, but Cristal Clere is well capable of showing strong form at this level, as seen when chasing home Al Qareem at Chester last season.

On his comeback at Tipperary, he ran as well as could have been expected over a trip that is well short of his best, but the flip side here is that two miles may stretch his stamina. He will give you a run for your money for a long way but may be found wanting at the finish.

2 Samui (3)

Age: 7 Weight: 9st 6lb Form: 12320- Rating: 104 Jockey: Declan McDonogh Trainer: Gordon Elliott

Samui was a winner of two of his first three starts on the level last season and was an impressive 17-length winner on the second of those three starts. He went on to contest a top handicap at York, where a fellow Irish raider, Extensio, just beat him.

That was followed by a third behind Absurde at this level at Chester and a promoted second-place finish in the Rose Bowl at Newmarket (the winner, Al Nayyir, was disqualified). He then rounded off his flat campaign down the field in the English Cesarewith at Newmarket, which is a run that you can forgive him.

Samui comes in here race fit after a below-par season over hurdles, but given he has no trip or ground issues, there still may be a bit more to come from this six-year-old.

3 Shanroe (8)

Age: 11 Weight: 9st 6lb Form: 16/50- Rating: 101 Jockey: Robbie Colgan Trainer: Karl Thornton

Shanroe has been a credit to his connections over the years and even though he is getting on in years, it wasn’t long ago that he was winning at this level. But, at the age of 11, he will need to roll back the years to get his head in front today.

His two runs last season came at Chester, where he wasn’t far behind Samui, but he was beaten 67 lengths on his next start over this trip. Today is obviously not as competitive as his latest flat run, but three runs over hurdles since then have been less than inspiring, which raises a lot of questions about his retained ability.

4 Taipan(8)

Age: 7 Weight: 9st 6lb Form: 8070-3 Rating: 97 Jockey: Shane Foley Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Taipan was turned over in the 2024 running of this race off a mark of 100 when the odds on favourite. Since then, he has gone on to win at the Galway Festival, beating the talented Run For Oscar, but was quite disappointing in his following four runs last season.

He returned to the track this season with a good third behind Falcon Eight at Gowran, and since that run, Taipan has been dropped one pound for that effort, leaving him on the same make when getting the better of Run For Oscar at Galway. He should be primed to try to go one better than he did in 2024 and is a big player back on this track.

5 Dallas Star (10)

Age: 4 Weight: 9st 5lb Form: 0-1462 Rating: 101 Jockey: David Egan Trainer: Adrian Murray

Dallas Star made an impressive start for Adrian Murray when causing a 50/1 shock by getting the better of the Ballydoyle duo, The Euphrates and Illinois, in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes. However, he only ran once last season after that win, when he was down the field in the Epsom Derby.

He came back in February with a win at Dundalk and has run with credit since, most notably on his latest start when getting within a length of Kyprios at Leopardstown. His mark has been untouched for that effort, and if he can back up that performance, he may be the one that they all have to beat.

6 Duraji (2)

Age: 4 Weight: 9st 5lb Form: 21-65 Rating: 100 Jockey: Chris Hayes Trainer: D K Weld

This lightly raced son of Dubawi was a winner of a maiden last season and has acquitted himself well since his return to the track in April. Duraji has finished sixth of seven in a Group 2 in Germany and followed that up with a last of five behind Kyprios at Leopardstown but was only beaten just over three lengths (Dallas Star was second).

For all that he has run well on both occasions over 1m4f and 1m6f, the step up to 2m is a worry given how he has finished on both occasions. He will need to find stamina reserves that he has yet to show if he is to play a leading role here.

7 Poetic Sound (7)

Age: 4 Weight: 9st 5lb Form: 411-23 Rating: 101 Jockey: Colin Keane Trainer: Ger Lyons

Poetic Sound is another lightly raced and unexposed runner here but one that looks sure to be suited to stepping up in trip. He was sent off a strong 6/4 favourite for a handicap at Navan in April but found Saturn too good for him in the end, but he may have won for not wandering around under pressure in the closing stages.

You can put that down to inexperience as he went on to pack up that run with a brave front running display only to fade out of it inside the final one hundred yards behind Kyprios over the same course and distance. Should they decide to make the running with him here, he could be hard to peg back. He’s one of the main players.

8 Goodie Two Shoes (4)

Age: 6 Weight: 9st 4lb Form: 816/31 Rating: 100 Jockey: Dyaln Brown McMonagle Trainer: Joseph O’Brien

The JP McManus-owned mare has four wins from eight starts on the flat but has failed to take to her jumps. She returned to the flat with a career-best win over 1m6f in a Listed Mares & Fillies contest at Gorwan Park.

The form of that is good as she beat Fairy Wings by eight lengths, who was having her first run back after finishing off last season with back-to-back wins. The step up in trip will hold no fear for Goodie Two Shoes, and should she kick on from her latest win, she has what it takes to make it back-to-back wins.

9 La Isla Mujeres (4)

Age: 5 Weight: 9st 4lb Form: 5/515- Rating: 100 Jockey: Billy Lee Trainer: Paddy Twomey

La Isla Mujeres was a two-time winner in the UK for Ralph Beckett and has added to those wins with a win over Cristal Clere on her second start for new connections last season. She was sent off as a 6/4 favourite for a Group 3 at Cork on her next start, but seemed to lack the gear at a crucial stage, but plugged on well in the end.

The new trip should suit her, and if she is ready to go on her return to the track, she has a profile that suggests she can reach new heights as a five-year-old.

Star rating:

Bet on La Isla Mujeres with SBK

10 Royal Entry (6)

Age: 4 Weight: 9st 0lb Form: 292-21 Rating: 90 Jockey: Donagh O’Connor Trainer: Paddy Twomey

There is no getting away from the talent that Royal Entry possesses, but her massive issue is leaving the stall. She loves making life difficult for herself when consistently losing length at the start, yet she still managed to win impressively at Cork this month, looking like she had no hope at the halfway point.

Her chances will hinge on how much ground she loses at the start, and even though she has a lot to find on figures, she will have a chance if she can break on terms. She’s interesting but risky.

Listed His Majesty’s Plate verdict

This year’s renewal of His Majesty’s Plate looks one of the most competitive in a while, where many have a realistic chance of taking home the listed prize.

DALLAS STAR is the one to side with and can make jockey David Egan’s trip worthwhile. Goodie Two Shoes and Taipan may prove his biggest danger.
