Chris Dudley’s NBA legacy is marred by one thing.
His free-throw shooting.
Dudley began his career at the Cleveland CavaliersGETTYThe retired NBA veteran spent 16 seasons in the NBA, playing a stunning 886 games across five teams.
The now 60-year-old is known as a journeyman center, known for his dominance in grabbing rebounds and blocking shots.
Dudley’s most successful stint in the NBA came with the New York Knicks. During his second season, he played in the 1999 NBA Finals, a loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
Many will remember Dudley for two things – being the guy on the end of Shaquille O’Neal‘s most famous posterizer and a super unreliable free-throw shooter.
His free-throw shooting was so bad that he once missed 13 straight from the line in a game on April 14, 1990.
Dudley’s most embarrassing free-throw shooting game came in 1989 against the Washington Bullets, when he had five chances to make one free throw in a single play and missed all of them.
Dudley was fouled, stepped to the line and missed both shots. The official called a lane violation, so he shot a third, which he missed.
Another lane violation was called, he missed again, and amazingly, another violation was called, but Dudley missed the free throw again, making him the first player to miss five free throws in one trip at the time.
“I wasn’t good at free throws,” Dudley reportedly said. “Neither was Shaq. So really, you could describe my game as Shaq-esque.”
It’s no surprise that Dudley ended his career with the second-worst percentage in NBA history with .458.

When Dudley retired in 2003, it didn’t take him long to find a new venture.
In early 2006, he became Vice President of the M Finaicnal Wealth Management. In October 2008, he became the wealth management partner with Filgree Advisors.
Then, in 2009, he turned his attention to politics, and in December that year he entered the race to become the Governor of Oregon.
First, he had to win the Republican primary, and in doing so, he raised an initial $340,000 for his campaign.
By March 2010, he had raised over a million dollars, with Nike co-founder Phil Knight chipping in with $50,000.
By May, he won the primary and was the official Republican candidate ahead of the November election. By the time votes were cast, he had raised over $5 million.
However, Dudley would end up losing the election to his Democratic opposition, John Kitzhaber, who won by 22,000 votes.
After that campaign, he wouldn’t re-enter political life again and would return to a career in finance.
To his credit, Dudley has forged an impressive career in the corporate world, where he is now the senior wealth advisor and director of sports and entertainment for Boston Private Wealth.
A firm that has over $7.1 billion in assets and specialises in working with athletes and high-net-worth celebrities.
His biography on their website reads as follows:
“Chris Dudley is responsible for helping clients align their investment portfolio with their goals, identifying asset allocation and tax-efficient strategies to diversify risk and enhance return.”
Not a bad post-retirement gig for the ex-NBA veteran.
