IRVINE — The Beckman baseball team got a quality outing from starting pitcher Carter Head in the CIF-SS Division 3 semifinals Tuesday at Beckman High School.
But the Saints countered with a quality pitcher of their own in freshman Dean Brosterhouse.
The Patriots couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities against Brosterhouse in the first two innings nor extend a potential big inning late.
The Saints, however, made the most of their scoring chances and made some fine plays on defense on their way to a 4-1 victory.
San Dimas (19-10) will play Glendora for the Division 3 championship on Friday or Saturday. The finals schedule will be announced Wednesday morning.
“When you get this far in the playoffs, you’re going to have great starting pitching,” Beckman coach Kevin Lavalle said. “The difference in the game … It’s pretty simple. They hit with guys on base and we didn’t play great defense.”
The Saints spoiled the Patriots’ bid to win back-to-back Division 3 championships. Beckman defeated St. John Bosco, 2-1, in the 2024 Division 3 final.
In the second inning, Beckman had runners on second and third with one out when Anton Le hit a soft line drive to shortstop Jason Almeda.
The runner on second had taken off for third base and couldn’t get back to the bag in time and was doubled up for the final out when Ameda threw to second.
In the third inning, the Patriots (18-14) had a runner on first and two outs when San Dimas right fielder Aaden Escarcega made an outstanding shoestring catch for the final out, saving a run.
The Patriots were trailing 2-0 in the sixth when they started to rally.
Sean Franco led off the inning with a single and was driven in by Kai Carney’s double for the Patriots’ first run.
Bosterhouse retired Jaxson Gomez for the first out, then was relieved by James Rocha who struck Nick Molina for the second out.
Seth Sanchez then hit a fly ball into shallow center field that appeared as though it would drop in for a hit and score the tying run, but second baseman Josh Calcanas made an over-the-shoulder catch, nearly colliding with the shortstop and centerfielder.
“These guys have been playing their best baseball in the playoffs,” Sam Dimas co-coach Mike Regan said. “We’ve been like Jekyll and Hyde and now these guys are putting it together and they’re having great at-bats and I’m really proud of these guys.”
Brosterhouse earned the victory. He allowed three hits and a run over 5 1/3 innings.
In the seventh, Calcanas doubled home the Saints’ third run and later scored from third on a squeeze bunt by Michael Melodia.
While he pitched well enough to win, Head took the loss. He allowed two runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.
