The first of those locations is set to open in Gastonia, a Charlotte suburb.
“For 75 years, Whataburger has grown from a single burger stand into a brand folks love across the country—but our heart has always stayed right where it belongs: in local communities just like Gastonia,” CEO Debbie Stroud said in a statement.
“As someone who lived for years in North Carolina, finally opening our doors here feels like coming home. We’re excited to start making memories together—first bites, first jobs, first dates—and to deliver the Whataburger experience that keeps fans coming back: hot, fresh, and made Just Like You Like It,” she added.
The brand has over 1,100 locations in total.

Whataburger’s entry into the North Carolina market has placed it in competition with the similarly named local chain What-A-Burger.
The two chains are not related, but the competition has caused some legal disputes.
Per Texas newspaper Chron, Whataburger recently sued What-A-Burger over the use of the name in January.
As of May, both companies are still using the similar names.
LOCALS REACT
Some in the Tar Heel State are excited about the expansion of Whataburger.
“I hope it’s as good as the ones in Texas!!” one Facebook user commented on a post by WCNC. “Best fast food I’ve ever had.”
Some voiced frustration over the name controversy.
“We already have What A Burger in Kannapolis,” one wrote. “This outfit needs to change their name!”
One commented with an eye-roll emoji.
“Way too many hamburger joints around here, can they not come up with something else better lol,” they wrote.
“What about ten mom and pop hamburger joints to open instead of ten chain,” another wrote. “I’m had enough of the fn corporate world.”
