Redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey capped off a record-breaking debut collegiate campaign with four goals to lead the UNC offense, one which used a 5-1 run across the first and second quarters to build a comfortable lead which would last the rest of the game. After leading 1-0 early, Northwestern never got closer than two goals (5-3 early in the third quarter) for the rest of the afternoon.
Eliza Osburn and Olivia Vergano each scored twice, while goalie Betty Nelson made eight saves to keep the Wildcats at arm’s length. Kiley Mottice, Marissa White, Carolina Godine and Kate Levy – Jenny Levy’s daughter – scored once. Chloe Humphrey accounted for 11 of UNC’s 35 shots, while her sister Ashley Humphrey recorded a team-high four assists, extending her own all-time and UNC single-season points records.
As a team, Carolina outshot Northwestern 35-22, held a 29-16 edge in shots on goal and won 17 of 24 draw controls.
The win is UNC’s second against Northwestern this season, after the Tar Heels won on the road in March. It’s also Carolina’s seventh against a team ranked in the top 5, and 15th against a ranked team overall.
For UNC athletics at large, the women’s lacrosse title is the school’s 52nd overall. Of those 52, 39 have been won by women’s programs.
UNC is now 4-2 in national championship games under Levy and has won three in a row. The Tar Heels finish the 2025 season at 22-0.
