Kylian Mbappe has clinched the European Golden Boot for the first time in his career – creating history in the process.

The Real Madrid striker has capped off an incredible opening season in Spain having scored 42 goals in 55 games in all competitions.

Mbappe has found the back of the net on 31 occasions from 34 LaLiga outings to add another individual honour to his ever-growing trophy cabinet.

The Frenchman had overtaken Sporting Lisbon marksman Viktor Gyokeres into top spot following his double in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Real Sociedad.

It left Mbappe on 62 points, ahead of Gyokeres on 58.5, with goals worth two points for teams in Europe’s top five leagues, as opposed to 1.5 for clubs outside.

Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah could have caught Mbappe on the final day of the Premier League.

Sitting on 56 points, the Egyptian winger needed to score a hat-trick against Crystal Palace at Anfield to jointly share the award.

However, he scored just once as the Reds drew 1-1 against to the Eagles to leave him third in the standings.

Though Salah has equalled Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s goal contribution record in a single Premier League season with 47 [29 goals, 18 assists].

But while Salah has missed out on his first European Golden Boot, Mbappe has become the first Les Bleus star since Thierry Henry in 2005 to claim the trophy.

In doing so, he is now the only player in world football to win the European Golden Boot, World Cup Golden Boot and the Champions League Golden Boot.

That is in addition to being the only footballer to also have scooped the Pichichi Trophy [LaLiga top scorer] and the Gerd Muller Award [highest scoring player in a season].

Mbappe has also become the first Madrid player since Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2007 to win the Pichichi Trophy in their debut campaign.

It’s been a season of record-breaking stats from Mbappe, who has justified why Los Blancos brought him in on a free transfer last summer.

He recently broke club legend Alfredo Di Stefano’s 71-year record of most LaLiga goals scored in their first season at the Bernabeu.

And earlier this month, he broke a 33-year record previously held by Ivan Zamorano by scoring the most goals for Real in their debut term.

Meanwhile, he is just the fourth player in LaLiga history to score at least 30 goals in their opening season, along with Pruden, Romano and Ronaldo Nazario.

Mbappe could extend his goal tally for the season with Madrid to take part in the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts next month.
