OCVarsity’s highlights from the CIF-SS baseball quarterfinals Friday, May 23:
Beckman overcame a four-run deficit in the seventh inning, with help from two home runs, to defeat Arrowhead Christian 5-4 on Friday in the CIF-SS Division 3 quarterfinals at Arrowhead Christian High.
The Patriots (18-13) started their rally in the seventh with a leadoff walk and Nick Molina’s two-run home run.
Later in the inning, Gus Powell hit a three-run home run to give Beckman a 5-4 lead.
Beckman had just two hits prior to the seventh inning.
Beckman, which won the Division 3 championship last season, will host San Dimas in the semifinals Tuesday.
Molina pitched a complete game for the Patriots, allowed three earned runs on seven hits and had five strikeouts.
Division 6
Estancia 4, Pacifica Christian 3 (9 innings): Sawyer Atkinson’s RBI double for Estancia in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the quarterfinal game into extra innings, and Jake Humphries’ hit in the bottom of the ninth drove in Atkinson for the winning run.
Estancia (18-13), a CIF-SS champion in 2022, will play at home Tuesday against Rancho Mirage in the semifinals.
Pacifica Christian, a CIF finalist last year, finished 14-12.
Division 2
Fountain Valley 5, Torrance 2: Logan Hunt pitched five shutout innings for the Barons (18-13), who will play at Mater Dei in the semifinals Tuesday.
Isaac Lomeli and Tony Zamora had one RBI each for Fountain Valley.
The Barons were the fourth-place team in the Sunset League this season.
Etiwanda 8, Servite 3: Etiwanda (17-12-1) scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the visiting Friars (17-14).
Servite scored its three runs in the second inning and had a 3-1 lead until the sixth inning.
Tomas Cernius had two hits and an RBI for Servite.
The Friars finished fourth in the Trinity League.
Etiwanda plays West Ranch in the semifinals Tuesday.
Division 3:
Glendora 2, Costa Mesa 1: Costa Mesa did not allow an earned run but fell to Glendora at Costa Mesa High.
Troy Simmonds allowed two unearned runs in four innings with three strikeouts for Costa Mesa (24-7).
Will Morales pitched three innings of scoreless relief with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
Wylan Rottschafer hit an RBI double for Costa Mesa’s lone run. The Mustangs had a nine-game winning streak entering Friday.
Division 4
Thousand Oaks 6, Woodbridge 3: Nevan Namgoong went 4 for 4 for the Warriors (21-10) in their loss at Thousand Oaks.
Woodbridge finished third in the Pacific Coast League.
Thousand Oaks plays Dos Pueblos in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Division 5:
Northwood 1, Citrus Hill 0: Paul Grossman and Garret Stevenson combined to shut out Citrus Hill.
Grossman allowed three hits in 6⅓ innings with five walks and seven strikeouts. Stevenson earned the save by getting the last two outs of the game.
Carter Liu had two hits for Northwood (15-15-1) and drove in the lone run of the game. Liu and Colin Carlson had stolen bases for the Timberwolves. Grossman and Joseph Harper each hit doubles.
Northwood will play St. Anthony on the road in the semifinals Tuesday.
Division 7:
Mary Star 8, Garden Grove 7: Mary Star scored seven of their runs in the fifth and sixth innings to edge visiting Garden Grove.
Garden Grove’s pitchers allowed just one earned run and its defense made four errors. Rohan Ramos had nine strikeouts in five innings for Garden Grove (21-10) and allowed just four hits.
Manny Martinez, Jose Fernandez and Frank Lam each had two hits and an RBI for the Argonauts. Martinez and Lam stole bases.
Garden Grove scored two runs in the seventh inning and the last out was made on a pickoff play.
Division 8:
Valencia 9, San Bernardino 3: Vincente Ybarra had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers (12-14).
Jonathan Rodriguez struck out nine in six innings for Valencia.
Valencia plays at Pioneer (16-12) in the semifinals Tuesday.
Fillmore 3, La Quinta 2: Johnny Forte and Felix Perez each drove in runs for La Quinta (17-8) in a road loss to Fillmore.
Jackson Clark allowed two earned runs in six innings with three strikeouts.
