Orange County high school track and field athletes are one step away from being able to compete in the CIF State Championships meet next week in Fresno.
To get there, they must perform well in the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet on Saturday at Moorpark High.
The top six finishers in the first heat for each Masters Meet event will advance to the CIF State meet at Buchanan High in Clovis on May 30 and 31. At-large entries advance to the CIF State meet based on performances from both heats.
The Masters Meet field events begin at 11:30 a.m. and track events start at 1 p.m. with the girls 4×100 relay.
The Masters Meet has 18 qualifiers from last week’s CIF-SS Finals at Moorpark High. The four divisional champions of each event automatically qualified for the Masters Meet along with the next best performances to get to 18 qualifiers for each event.
Rosary’s 4×400 relay team of Tra’Via Flournoy Jada Faison, Maliyah Collins and Justine Wilson set a new county mark of 3 minutes, 48.92 seconds while winning the CIF-SS Division 4 championship in the event.
Collins, a freshman, won the Division 4 100 meters and Wilson, a junior, won the 200.
Among the other many Orange County athletes who won individual titles last week is Aliso Niguel junior Jaslene Massey, who won the Division 1 shot put and discus.
