Chris Eubank Jr was in talks to sign with bitter rival Eddie Hearn before ‘scumbag’ rant ...Middle East

Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith claims Chris Eubank Jr was in talks to sign with Eddie Hearn’s promotional outfit last year.

The revelation comes as a surprise given Eubank Jr and Hearn‘s clear disdain for one another.

Eubank Jr and Hearn have a frosty relationship

Eubank Jr fought under the Matchroom Boxing banner for a stint during the mid-2010s.

But in the years that followed, their relationship became complex and combative.

The acrimony came to a head in 2022 during the fallout of Eubank Jr’s failed fight with Conor Benn.

Benn tested positive for the banned substance Clomifene in a pre-fight drug test, resulting in the event getting cancelled.

Eubank Jr later accused Hearn and his associate Smith of trying to push for the bout to still go ahead in light of the adverse findings during an impassioned rant where he branded the Matchroom moguls and various other promoters ‘scumbags’ last September.

Despite this, Smith claims Eubank Jr was considering a move back to Matchroom last July before he put pen to paper on a partnership deal with BOXXER.

“He was talking about signing with us before he signed with BOXXER,” Smith told Seconds Out.

“July last year, he was talking about signing with us, having conversations.

“His manager, Napa, said we would be the best place to go.

“You can ask him, and if he says something different, then I will have a chat with him.

“So if we are scumbags, if we are untrustworthy, if we are so dangerous then why are you even having a conversation with us?”

Eubank Jr and Benn eventually settled their score last month after Benn was cleared of all wrongdoing by the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP).

Throughout the build-up to their rescheduled grudge match, Eubank Jr and Hearn repeatedly went back and forth at press events, with ‘Next Gen’ refusing to allow his former promoter to speak.

After interrupting him at their final press conference, Hearn left the stage and tagged in Smith to take his place.

Smith, who is dating Eubank Jr’s sister Emily, was given the same treatment.

“Frank, if Eddie’s not speaking, do you think you’re going to get a word in?,” said Eubank Jr as Smith fought for words.

Eubank was also heavily critical of legendary promoter WarrenGetty

The two parties will be working together again for the upcoming rematch between Eubank Jr and Benn.

Hearn claims the sequel is being targeted for September 27 at the scene of their first fight, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
